FAQ: Ninjutsu, Bujinkan

What is ninjutsu?
Ninjutsu or sometimes ninjutsu, is the art of the ninja. It is not just the martial art, but also includes healing, geography, spying, infiltration, etc.

What is Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu?
This is what we learn. It is a subset of Ninjutsu. You could call that the martial art within ninjutsu. It involves unarmed fighting techniques and weapons as well.

What is the Bujinkan?
Bujinkan is the organization created by our Soke, Hatsumi Masaaki. It means the Hall of the Divine Warrior (or something like it...
Bu-jin-kan:
Bu: warrior
Jin: God, spirit
Kan: place, hall, room

Do you sparr?
No and yes.
We do not spar on trainings, but members are free to seek out other dojos for sparring (not necessarily Bujinkan dojos).
Recommendations: judo for throws, thai-box/kyokushin for kicks and punches, and MMA for mixing it all together.

What do you wear (training gear)?
We wear black "karate" uniform so called GI. The material is not as thick as a judo uniform, but should be more stronger than a "standard" karate uniform.
Belt colors are:
0-10 kyu - white
9kyu-1kyu: green (women can opt for red)
1 dan - 10 dan: black

Are there really 15 dan grades in Bujinkan?
No.
As far as we know there are only 10 dan grades! The misconception comes from the fact that Soke further divides the 10th dan grade into 5 sub-categories (Chi-Sui-Ka-Fu-Ku).
However we have to mention that often Soke himself refers to these grades as 14th, 15th dan, as it is easier to say.

So how can I get dan grades? How long will it take to get black belt?
:-)
Hey! If you are a black belt in Bujinkan you should already know this.
If you are not, then concentrate on the basics. Thinking too much on getting a black belt will badly influence your training. You should really focus on the KIHON.
Here is a secret: If you badly want a black belt, go and buy one in a MA shop. But please, please, please only wear it at home HAHAHAHA :-)

Seriously how long does it take to get a black belt?
It depends on you.
It should take at least 6 years minimum (some say it takes only 3 years). While there are places where it would take 10-13 years (Israel).
